Patenting Expert or Indicator Code.

Is it possible to patent Expert or Indicator code?
Are there any restrictions imposed by MQ to do so?
Is it possible to disassemble Expert or Indicator code?
Are there any back doors for anyone to upload the code?
Hypothetically, if I would have a code which can produce about 280 pips per 24 hours with 96% probability forward tested, what would be the best way to protect it?

You can not patent a trading strategy. You can copyright the code and text describing the strat, but that only prevents people from re-publishing it..not using it. The only way to protect your system is to not tell people about it.

It is possible to decompile an EA, but supposedly only the people at MQ know how to do it. In any case, it is definately possible; it is only a matter of people finding out how. If it ever gets out, then MQ might change the format, but that is up to them.

If you really want to protect your system, don't sell it in any format. And if it works, why would you want to sell it??

My second question is, would a broker or bank look at someone who has such electronic system in negative manner?
Is a broker or bank in some disadvantage when an account makes 96% of trades?
Is it like in casino?... when you start winning they kick you out?

No, the broker just charges you extra for linking your code to their trading servers (typically fee is per transaction, e.g. FXCM charges $10 per automated trade ... I'm not sure, if the fees hit you twice per trade or only once).

Actually, my opinion on EAs and Indicators is little different. Given the way ForEx market works, there are no market movers as such and hence, higher feasibility of technical analysis. In such environment, success of known indicators and systems is like a self fulfilling prophecy...more people know about your indicator and/or system, more likely they are to watch for it and more likely to act upon it and this in turn makes your system/indicator more successful in the long run.

I personally have started to toy with some ideas and once ready, I plan to start a thread on DailyFX forum with the system, backtesting results and live results...so, be bold! :) Share your knowledge and you will only benefit...

Then don't use them! My broker charges me nothing per automated trade. Why should he?

Michal,

Good for you. FXCM (which is my broker) has free service for account balances of 100,000 USD+. I'm a small fish, so if I go for automated trading, FXCM charges me $10 per lot turnaround...here is the link..

Maratha,

That's just ridiculous. I strongly recommend you change brokers in a hurry.

Interbankfx will do or Alpari….small trade sizes is no problem with Interbank. You can trade lots down to 0.01...

:((

yes I plan to switch when I start to trade again with real money...in various 'seat-of-the-pants'/scalping attempts, have lost $1500 on real account in 2005...ouch! that was a good lesson...
