Tremendous treasures discovered in underground vaults of ancient temple in south India
The gems, gold, silver and jewellery found in an Indian temple are believed to be worth about $20 billion. Authorities say it could take a week just to inventory what was found.
The find immediately roused huge interest in the press and local residents and within hours a crowd of onlookers and journalists had gathered at the walls of the temple complex. Military personnel were sent to the site to ensure the protection of the find. Legend had it that the maharajahs, rulers of the kingdom of Travancore, had hidden their treasures in the temple for several hundred years.
Their descendants kept the treasure, but not so long ago, after a long legal battle, the Indian authorities seized the building from the aristocrats and started to search for the treasure. So far experts have opened two of the four rooms of the cache.
