Is there a way to get  the standard RED & GREEN candlesticks instead of the drab BLACK AND WHITE?

Yes

Open a chart =》Right click on the chart and go to its properties or simply press F8 =》Customize colors and everything and click OK =》 Save these settings as a template by going to the right click menu again, Templates, and Save Template. Save this template with the name default. By doing this MetaTrader will open new charts with your default template.
