Britain won't leave the EU despite referendum result, Austrian finance minister Hans Joerg Schelling told German newspaper Handelsblatt on Monday, arguing the economic volatility unleashed by the Brexit vote will prompt a rethink by the country.

"Britain will remain a member of the EU in the future," Schelling told the daily. "In five years, there will still be 28 member states."

He also said another option for Britain would be not to trigger Article 50 at all and remain part of the EU.

He noted that European leaders were discussing "all possibilities" - from Britain remaining in the EU to sealing "a free trade agreement on the Swiss or Norwegian model".
