Automated Trading Championship 2011: A New Round in the Fight of Trading Robots

Automated Trading Championships are held since 2006. This is an annual competition of trading robots for the impressive prize of $80,000. Each robot buys and sells assets in the Forex market based on a certain trading strategy implemented in that robot. Expert Advisors with the largest profits earned during three months of the competition win the ATC prizes. However, the Automated Trading Championship is not only a bitter struggle for prizes, but also an exhibition of achievements in robotics. Once a year, all the latest trends and most innovative ideas are subject to serious tests. The Championship provides the best opportunity to try any strategy - trading conditions during the competition are as realistic as possible.

The main purpose of the Automated Trading Championship is the popularization of the idea of automated trading. All the previous Championships aroused great interest of traders from all over the world and received broad coverage in specialized media. Largely due to the scale of the Championship and online broadcasts, automated trading has stepped into a new level. While in 2006 only one out of five traders knew about trading robots, today perhaps every market participant is familiar with this phenomenon.

"Five years ago we decided to organize the annual Automated Trading Championship," Renat Fatkhullin, CEO of MetaQuotes Software Corp., says. "Before this competition, ordinary traders didn't have an opportunity to evaluate automated trading and try the full possibilities of the MetaTrader 4 trading platform in this area. The Championship actually was the first public testing of different trading strategies in real conditions. It proved that autonomous automated trading systems can be quite successful. "

The Automated Trading Championship is based on the principles of equal rights and fair competition: all Expert Advisors trade in real time and under the same conditions. A developer creates a robot, registers as a Participant of the ATC and lets the EA trade on its own with no chance to alter it or intervene in its activities until the end of the competition.

The Championship provides perfect conditions for comparing different trading strategies, finding common programming errors and analyzing the behavior of participating robots. In addition, numerous statistical reports published during the competition show the relationship between various characteristics of Expert Advisors and their profitability. But that's not all. With each competition, the Championship website accumulates a lot of unique information, which is then available to theorists and practitioners of automated trading, as well as to ordinary traders who can use it in their research.

With the development of automated trading, participating Expert Advisors are becoming more and more sophisticated. It can be seen from the size of submitted files (they are becoming larger) and from the general trend. While most of the EAs of the 2006 Championship were relatively simple, trading one currency pair, later on the situation changed. First, the number of multicurrency Expert Advisors trading several currency pairs has grown significantly. Second, trading robots based on neural networks appeared in this competition. Such programs do not just trade according to a preset of parameters, but also learn in the course of trading. One of such EAs won the ATC 2007 earning $130,000$ which is almost three times more than the second best EA. The following year, being in the same conditions the winner earned 170 000. That's amazing!
