mpr,
1. When we refer... yup. (yes)
2. The way I understand it... MT4 does have this capability based on my experience, I simply changed the destination to where the order was sent. (to different currency pairs)
3. However, can multiple... yes, multiple charts can be opened up (simultaneously) in mt4 terminal. (each one being a diff. currency pair AND an EA running on each diff. chart pulled up) Yes, but y not use just one EA?
4. Let's say... It can be done in MT4. ;)
Mt4 is older and does not include features like lightning fast strategy tester, new function possibilities, etc., but it has enough to get the job done. MT5 is obviously the future, but many, many brokers still make MT4 available for use. I do not think there is enough demand currently for MT5 to be used as the singular trading platform for many brokers. It seems to be too much of a transition. Maybe I'm wrong, this is just what I think. Hope it was useful.
Sometimes ya' just gotta dive into it. ;) Sometimes not.
Thank you.

Thank You WhooDoo22!!! Yes, I definitely need to 'dive into it' like you say. The last programming experience I had was in Pascal and Fortran in college, so I'm a bit rusty. :)
I'm a bit rusty...
RE: Aren't we all sometimes? ;)
Your welcome.
Thank you.
Thanks for your input! I'm obviously VERY new to EA's, and am just trying to decide which platform I need to learn.
Just to add to what WhooDoo22 has said, which I think I agree with, the one thing you can't do in MT4 is test a strategy that trades more than one Instrument in the Strategy Tester, from here: Testing Features and Limits in MetaTrader 4 "Trading is permitted for the symbol under test only, no portfolio testing - Attempts to trade using another symbol will return error"
. . . I believe you may be able to do that in MT5 but you should seek confirmation over at the MQL5 forum.

Yes, I know this topic has probably been covered many times, so I'm asking for patience. I've been watching the championship for a couple of months now, and see a lot of articles and talk regarding the capability of MT5 to run a multi-currency EA. So my questions are all based around that one capability and what that really means. The reason I'm asking this, is because I have a strategy idea that involves multiple currencies, and if I'm going to learn to write an EA, then I don't want to waste time learning code on a platform that won't do what I need it to. So, here it goes...
- When we refer to a multi-currency EA, I'm assuming we're talking about a single EA, that can execute trading functions in multiple currency pairs simultaneously. Right?
- The way I understand it, MT4 does not have this capability, and can run one EA loaded on one chart. However, can multiple charts be opened up within MT4 simultaneously (each one being a different currency pair), with an EA running on each chart that's pulled up?
- Let's say that capability exist. Can the EA's running be written the 'watch' the account overall, and close all positions - no matter the currency - based on net profit of all open trades?
