The past cannot extrapolate "reliably" into the future.
However, it can help you avoid known pitfalls, which is not the same thing as telling you about all the pitfalls you may encounter in future, about your particular EA. Your can't really tell between a perfect curve-fitting backtest vs a true winning EA from backtesting alone. Therefore, by definition, backtesting is not reliable.
