Improve chat sistem in my site

I my system website people can chat with each by text message. But now my messenger very simple and uncomfortable. Notifications not come and all time refresh needed to see answer. I would like to improve ,make it life and comfortable. My system was made php and html and other. And it base on Linux server mysquel 5, php 4+
