Market Structure Indicator for MT5: HH, HL, LH, LL, BOS and CHoCH with Alerts
Not everyone has time to sit at the charts all day looking for market structure. This indicator does the reading for you. It shows you the past structure, the current structure and the change of structure, and it can notify you the moment something happens.
It is built for price action traders, smart money concept (SMC) traders, and anyone who wants a clean, rule-based view of trend on any symbol and timeframe: forex, gold, indices, crypto and stocks.
What it shows on your chart
- Swing labels: HH (Higher High), HL (Higher Low), LH (Lower High) and LL (Lower Low), placed on each confirmed swing point. Bullish structure (HH, HL) and bearish structure (LH, LL) use different colors so the trend reads at a glance.
- Zigzag line: A clean line connecting the swings, so you can see the market's leg structure without clutter. If two highs or two lows appear in a row, only the more extreme one is kept.
- BOS (Break of Structure): A dashed line and label when price closes beyond the last swing in the direction of the current trend, which signals trend continuation.
- CHoCH (Change of Character): A dashed line in a different color when price closes beyond the last swing against the current trend, which is the first sign of a possible reversal.
Alerts for every event, each with an on/off switch
You choose exactly what you want to be told about. Every event has its own setting:
- Higher High
- Higher Low
- Lower High
- Lower Low
- Bullish BOS
- Bearish BOS
- Bullish CHoCH
- Bearish CHoCH
Choose how alerts reach you: popup, sound (with a file name you can change), push notification to your phone, and email. Each alert message includes the symbol, timeframe, event name and price, for example: EURUSD H1: Bullish CHoCH @ 1.08520.
How it works
- The indicator detects swing highs and swing lows using a configurable number of bars on each side.
- A swing is confirmed only after that many bars have passed, so labels do not move or repaint once placed. They appear a few candles after the actual high or low. This is how swing-based tools work, and it keeps the structure reliable.
- BOS and CHoCH are decided on closed candles: a candle must close beyond the swing level, not just touch it with a wick. This reduces false breaks.
- Alerts only fire on newly closed bars. When you attach the indicator, old history does not trigger alerts.
How to use it
- Read the trend: HH and HL together suggest an uptrend. LH and LL suggest a downtrend.
- Spot continuation: A BOS in the direction of the trend shows the trend is still intact.
- Watch for reversals: A CHoCH is the first break against the trend and is often used as an early warning.
- Combine it with your own analysis: Support and resistance, supply and demand, order blocks, higher-timeframe bias, or your own entry rules.
- Let alerts do the watching: Turn on only the events you care about, such as CHoCH only on the H4 chart, and step away from the screen.
Input parameters
Structure
- Swing length: How many bars on each side define a swing. Lower values (2–3) give more detail and more small swings. Higher values (8–10) give fewer, larger swings. The default works well for most charts.
- Bars of history to draw: Limits how many bars are processed and drawn, to keep the chart fast.
Display
- Show labels, show zigzag, show BOS and CHoCH (each on/off)
- Label font size and zigzag line width
- Bullish color, bearish color, zigzag color, CHoCH color
Alerts: events
- A separate on/off setting for HH, HL, LH, LL, Bullish BOS, Bearish BOS, Bullish CHoCH and Bearish CHoCH
Alerts: delivery
- Popup, sound with file name, push notification and email
Notes
- The indicator works on any symbol and any timeframe.
- Push notifications need your MetaQuotes ID set up in the terminal (Tools → Options → Notifications). Email alerts need email configured in the terminal.
- Because swings are confirmed after a few bars, labels appear with a short delay. This is by design.
- This indicator is a charting and analysis tool. It does not open or close trades and does not give guaranteed signals.
