While thousands of executives were walking into their offices that morning, **Nick Leeson** was hiding in an airport bathroom in Kuala Lumpur.
He already knew what the rest of the financial world was about to discover:
He had just helped destroy one of Britain’s oldest banks. 😬
Meet Nick.
28 years old.
Working-class background.
A dream job trading derivatives for **Barings Bank** in Singapore.
The salary was nothing extraordinary.
The bonuses?
Potentially huge. 💰
There was only one small problem...
Nick wasn’t actually making money.
📉 **THE SECRET ACCOUNT**
Since 1992, Leeson had been hiding losses inside a secret account:

Instead of admitting the losses, he falsified records and made the trading operation look profitable.
And then he fell into one of the oldest traps in trading:

No.
🔥 **DOUBLE DOWN AND WIN IT BACK.**
Every new loss required a bigger trade.
Every bigger trade created a bigger problem.
And every bigger problem required an even bigger trade.

🌏 **THEN CAME KOBE**
On January 23, 1995, Leeson made a huge bet that Japan’s Nikkei index would rise.
Then the Kobe earthquake hit.
The market collapsed.
Nick could have stopped.
He didn’t.
Instead, he increased his bets dramatically, desperately trying to recover everything.
By February 23, the losses had reached approximately:
💥 **£827 MILLION**
More than twice Barings Bank’s available capital.
Nick left a note saying:
**“I’m sorry.”**
Then he ran.
🏦 **THE END OF BARINGS**
Barings had been founded in 1762.
More than two centuries of banking history...
Destroyed after one trader repeatedly refused to accept that he was wrong.
The bank was eventually sold to ING for:
**£1.**
Yes.
One pound. 😂
Leeson was later arrested, extradited to Singapore and sentenced to prison.
His story became a bestselling autobiography and was eventually turned into a movie.
And perhaps the most ironic part?
Today, his story is used around the world as a lesson in **risk management, control and trading psychology**.

Most trading disasters don’t begin with one enormous mistake.
They begin with a small one.
A loss you refuse to accept.
Then another trade.
