Newbie question about experts

I tried running a couple of the sample experts like MACD sample or Moving Average, I attached them to a chart and the smiley face is in the top right corner but nothing happens, It says that the expert was loaded successfully but nothing happens after that, I even left it on over night. I turned on Live trading in the Options screen. What am I doing wrong, I thought the experts are supposed to be able to make trades automatically, do I need to run scripts for that instead?
