In September 2011 Petya Nadtochy celebrated his fourth birthday. He lives in Belarus in the town of Vileika. The boy has a rare genetic disorder – a severe form of epidermolysis bullous. People suffering from this disease are called “butterfly people”: their skin is as thin and fragile as the wings of a butterfly. It can be injured only by a careless touch, and a slightest friction creates a long open wound, looking like a burn.
These children need constant care, they need special dressings and wound-healing tools, which can’t be found in Belarus. And there are no specialists on the disease as well. The situation is so bad, that in Belarus Petya could not even be diagnosed. In Europe, children suffering from bullous epidermolysis, get proper medical care and have a full life. In Belarus, deprived of access to essential medicines and medical care, they are disabled. Those few of them, who manage to survive...
