Follow these steps to correctly install and activate your automated trading strategy.
1. Locate the Data Folder
First, you need to place the EA file (usually ending in .ex5 or .mq5) into the correct directory within the platform.
Open your MetaTrader 5 platform.
Click on File in the top left corner of the menu bar.
Select Open Data Folder.
2. Copy the EA File
A window will open showing the internal files of your MT5 terminal.
Double-click the MQL5 folder.
Double-click the Experts folder.
Paste your EA file inside this folder.
Note: If your EA comes with specific libraries, paste library files (.dll) into the MQL5/Libraries folder.
3. Refresh the Navigator
You do not need to restart the platform. You can simply refresh the list.
Go back to the MT5 terminal.
Open the Navigator panel (Press Ctrl + N if it is not visible).
Right-click on Expert Advisors.
Click Refresh. Your new EA should now appear in the list.
4. Enable Algo Trading
Before attaching the EA to a chart, ensure the platform is allowed to execute automated trades.
Look at the toolbar at the top of the platform.
Click the Algo Trading button so that it turns Green (or shows a "Play" icon). *
5. Attach the EA to a Chart
Open the chart of the currency pair you wish to trade (e.g., EURUSD).
Set the correct Timeframe (e.g., M15, H1) required by your strategy.
Drag and drop the EA from the Navigator list onto the chart.
6. Configure Settings
A settings window will pop up immediately after you drop the EA on the chart.
Common Tab: Ensure that "Allow Algo Trading" is checked.
Dependencies: If your EA uses DLLs, go to the "Dependencies" tab and check "Allow DLL imports".
Inputs Tab: Adjust your lot size, risk settings, and other parameters here.
Click OK.
How to Verify It Is Working
Look at the top right corner of your chart. You should see:
The name of the EA.
A small Blue Hat icon next to the name.
Troubleshooting:
Grey Icon: If the hat icon is grey, check that the "Algo Trading" button on the top toolbar is Green.
Sad Face / Red Icon: Check the "Common" tab in the EA settings to ensure "Allow Algo Trading" is ticked specifically for that EA.
