I strongly advise freelancers not to work with this customer. The problem is not whether a task is “easy” or “complex.” In my experience, he does not have the technical knowledge required to properly evaluate complex development work himself, so he relies on third parties whose technical assessment I found extremely poor and unreliable. More importantly, he agrees to a scope, conditions and a price before the work is done. Then, once the work has been completed and it is time to pay, new conditions, new objections and new interpretations suddenly appear, and the previously agreed price is reduced. That is exactly what happened in my case: one amount was agreed for the work, the work was completed, and only afterwards he decided that the agreed payment was no longer acceptable. A professional customer should define the requirements, acceptance criteria and price before the work is performed — not change them retrospectively when payment becomes due. I would not work with this customer again and would strongly recommend that other developers protect themselves with very strict milestones, written acceptance criteria and upfront payments before starting any substantial work.
