how do i download mt4.....because every time i download it it downloads mt5 rather
I had the same problem and for 2 days I went around in circles.
Then I was finally told that "The mql5 portal is NOT providing an installer for MT4 because the official support for MT4 was finished".
The only place you can get the mt4 is from a broker.

It has been years since you could download MT4 from Metaquotes. You can only get it from a broker's website.
