On Thursday, Honda Motor Co officially announced that it was recalling up to 668,000 cars in Japan for the purpose of replacing air bag inflators supplied by Takata Corp. The given measure appears to be a part of an expanded nationwide recall announced earlier this year.

Japan's second-largest carmaker told it had recalled models, such as its Fit subcompact hatchback model as well as the Civic and Accord sedan models because of passenger-side air bags. Cars manufactured between 2009 and 2011 were affected, as the carmaker states.

The latest announcement takes the carmaker’s global tally of recalled air bags to approximately 51 million, just half of the 100 million slated for recall worldwide over inflators, that might explode with excessive force.

Defective air bags might have caused up to 14 deaths as well as 150 injuries worldwide, so they’re at the center of the car industry's greatest product recall.

Thursday's arose after in May, Japan's transport ministry ordered carmakers to recall an extra 7 million cars in Japan equipped with Takata air bag inflators, that don’t come with a drying agent, following an expanded recall by American transport authorities.
