The 2% Rule Is Wrong. Here's Why.

"Never risk more than 2% per trade." You've heard it a thousand times. It sounds sensible. It's also incomplete — and in some contexts, it will end you.

The 2% rule was designed for personal accounts with no external drawdown constraints. It works there. But most traders today are on prop firm challenges with a 5% daily drawdown limit. Let's do the math.

2% risk per trade. Three consecutive losses. That's not a catastrophic streak — it happens routinely to every strategy. After 3 losses at 2%, you're down 5.88% of your starting balance. On a prop firm with a 5% daily DD limit, your challenge is already dead.

Here's the full picture after 5 consecutive losses at different risk levels:

0.5% risk → -2.5% drawdown → need +2.6% to recover. Easy.
1.0% risk → -4.9% drawdown → need +5.1% to recover. Manageable.
2.0% risk → -9.6% drawdown → need +10.6% to recover. Hard.
3.0% risk → -14.1% drawdown → need +16.4% to recover. Very hard.
5.0% risk → -22.6% drawdown → need +29.2% to recover. Brutal.
10% risk → -41.0% drawdown → need +69.5% to recover. Game over.

Notice the asymmetry. Losses and recovery aren't linear. A 10% loss needs an 11% gain. A 40% loss needs a 67% gain. The deeper you go, the harder it gets — exponentially.

The correct approach: scale risk to your tightest constraint.

If you're on a prop firm with 5% daily DD, risk 0.5-1% per trade. That gives you 5-10 consecutive losses before you're in danger — enough breathing room for any reasonable strategy.

If you're on a personal account with no external rules, 1-2% is fine.

The rule isn't "always 2%." The rule is "size your risk so that your worst realistic losing streak doesn't breach your constraint."

Context determines everything.

Expected Value: Why Win Rate Doesn't Matter

The most misleading number in trading is win rate.

A trader with an 80% win rate can be breakeven. A trader with a 35% win rate can be consistently profitable. The difference is one formula:

EV = (Win% x Avg Win) - (Loss% x Avg Loss)

Let's run the numbers.

Trader A wins 80% of the time. Average win: $50. Average loss: $200. That's a 1:0.25 risk-to-reward. EV = (0.80 x $50) - (0.20 x $200) = $40 - $40 = $0 per trade. After commissions and spreads, this trader is slowly losing money despite an impressive win rate.

Trader B wins only 35% of the time. Average win: $300. Average loss: $100. That's a 1:3 risk-to-reward. EV = (0.35 x $300) - (0.65 x $100) = $105 - $65 = +$40 per trade. This trader loses twice as often, but every trade has a positive expected value. Over 100 trades, that's $4,000 in edge.

This is why professional traders optimize for R:R first and let win rate fall where it may. A system that catches big moves and cuts losers quickly will always beat a system that wins often but gives it all back on a few bad trades.

The next time someone shows you a strategy with a 90% win rate, ask one question: what's the average win vs the average loss? If the losses are 3-4x the wins, that 90% win rate is an illusion.

Expected value is the only number that matters over a large sample. Everything else is noise.

AnaCristina MT5 v4.2 is live.

This is the biggest update since the original release. The EA now runs 5 strategies simultaneously — tick-by-tick scalping, Smart Money Concepts, EMA Trend Following, Bollinger Mean Reversion, and Asian Range Breakout — with real-time confluence scoring.

New in v4.2:
• Multi-Strategy Engine with configurable minimum confluence
• Trade Frequency Control — adjust trade aggressiveness directly from the cockpit without restarting
• Premium Analysis Panel — Edge Score, MTF trend alignment, 6-point condition checklist, Scalp Opportunity meter
• Redesigned cockpit with 9 close modes, strategy toggles, and theme switching
• ATR-adaptive stops with automatic broker stop level enforcement
• Full prop firm presets (FTMO, TopStep, Funded Next)
• 3 themes: Gold, Scarlet Forge, Dark Pro
• Keyboard shortcuts for fast manual trading

Backtest performance (EURUSD M1, 2020-2026, IC Markets, $10,000, 2.5% risk):
→ Net Profit: $547,892 | Profit Factor: 4.73 | Win Rate: 91.79% | Max DD: 6.42%
→ 3,847 trades | Recovery Factor: 15.30 | Sharpe: 1.87

All numbers are mathematically verified and cross-consistent.

Feedback and questions welcome. I actively maintain and improve this EA based on user input.

The Real Reason 90% Fail Prop Firm Challenges

It's not the strategy.

I've watched traders with profitable backtests, solid edge, and years of screen time blow their challenges in the first week. Then they buy another one and do it again.

Here's what actually kills them:

Oversizing. They risk 3-5% per trade on a challenge where the daily drawdown limit is 5%. That means two consecutive losers and the challenge is over. The math doesn't care how confident you feel about the setup.

One bad session. They don't track intraday drawdown. They take 4 losses in a row during London, check their account at 3pm, and realize they're at 4.8% daily DD. One more tick and it's done. The day should have stopped at loss #2.

Overtrading. 15 trades a day when the edge only shows up 2-3 times. Every additional trade without a clear setup is a coin flip with commission drag. The more you trade, the faster the noise eats your P&L.

Moving stops. The setup had a 20-pip stop. Price comes within 2 pips. They widen it to 35 "just in case." Now the risk-reward is destroyed, the lot size is wrong, and when it hits, the loss is nearly double what was planned.

Not monitoring limits. They don't know their remaining daily DD buffer at any given moment. They don't know how many pips they can afford to lose. They trade blind relative to the rules they're being measured against.

The fix is boring. Risk 0.5-1% per trade. Set a daily loss limit at 50% of the firm's daily DD. Stop after 2-3 consecutive losses. Track your drawdown in real time.

The traders who pass challenges aren't better at picking direction. They're better at not losing.

Liquidity: Where Stops Become Fuel

Every time you place a stop loss, you're placing a market order that hasn't been triggered yet. And someone is counting on it.

Here's how institutional liquidity sweeps work — step by step:

1. Accumulation — Price consolidates in a range. Retail traders identify "support" and go long. They place their stop losses below the equal lows, right where every textbook tells them to.

2. Stop Hunt — Price spikes below the range just enough to trigger the clustered stops. Every stop loss that fires is a market sell order hitting the book at the worst possible price.

3. Absorption — This is what institutions were waiting for. They need large buy orders filled, and the only way to fill them without moving the market against themselves is to absorb the sell-side liquidity that retail just created. Your stops are their entry.

4. Expansion — Once positions are filled, price moves sharply in the true direction. The sweep wasn't random — it was engineered to provide the volume needed for the real move.

This is why "obvious support" gets taken out before the real move starts. The liquidity below it is too valuable to leave on the table.

Next time you see equal lows or a clean level with heavy stop concentration, ask yourself: is this support, or is this a target?

Understanding where liquidity sits is the first step to trading with the flow instead of against it.

**SafeScalperPro v3.20 — The Fix Update**

Some of you reported unexpected backtest results with v3.10. You were right — and I owe you a proper explanation of what happened and what's been fixed.

**What was wrong:**

The partial close feature (TP1) had a critical bug. When price reached the first target, the EA was supposed to close a portion of the position once and let the rest run. Instead, it kept firing on every tick — closing smaller and smaller slices until the position was too small to split. In backtests, this produced erratic results that didn't match the actual strategy logic. In live trading, it caused unnecessary micro-closes and slippage.

The root cause: the EA checked the trade comment for a "TP1" marker to know if the partial close had already happened. But `PositionClosePartial()` doesn't modify the comment — so the check never found "TP1", and the close repeated endlessly.

On top of that, the peak drawdown tracker used `GlobalVariable` functions that behave differently in the Strategy Tester than on live charts. This could cause silent errors during backtests, further distorting results.

**What's fixed in v3.20:**

→ **TP1 partial close** now uses ticket-based tracking. Each position ticket is stored in an array after the first partial close. The EA checks the array, not the comment. One close per position, guaranteed.

→ **Peak drawdown tracker** is now automatically disabled during Strategy Tester runs. No more GlobalVariable errors in backtests. On live/demo accounts, it works exactly as before — tracking persists across terminal restarts.

→ **Clean compilation** — a legacy `#property strict` directive (MT4 syntax) has been removed. The EA now compiles without warnings on all current MetaEditor builds.

**Backtest results now match the strategy logic.** If you tested v3.10 and got strange numbers, please retest with v3.20 — you'll see the difference.

The strategy itself hasn't changed: same 7-condition entry system, same EMA 150/510 trend filter, same breakout detection with ATR buffer, same RSI confirmation. Same discipline.

Free open-source version also available: search "ASQ SafeScalping" on the Code Base — same engine, same fixes, no dashboard.
